Matt Weston claimed Great Britain's first medal at the Winter Olympics on Friday by winning the men's skeleton -- the event from which Ukrainian Vladyslav Heraskevych had been disqualified.

Weston clocked a total time of 3min 43.33sec to win the event, his first Olympic medal, at the Cortina Sliding Centre and get Britain on the medal table at the Milan-Cortina Games.

The 28-year-old was 0.88sec faster than Germany's Axel Jungk, who took silver. Germany's Christopher Grotheer won bronze.

Weston, a two-time world champion, is the first British man to be crowned Olympic skeleton champion, with track record times in all four of his runs.

Earlier on Friday, Heraskevych lost his appeal against his disqualification from the Winter Olympics for wearing a helmet that featured images of Ukrainians killed during the war with Russia.

Gestures of a political nature during competition are forbidden under the Olympic charter.
