Toronto: Swiatek-Bezwingerin Haddad Maia im Halbfinale
Außenseiterin Beatriz Haddad Maia hat ihren Siegeszug beim WTA-Turnier in Toronto fortgesetzt. Nach ihrem Erfolg gegen die Weltranglistenerste Iga Swiatek (Polen) setzte sich die Brasilianerin auch gegen Tennis-Olympiasiegerin Belinda Bencic durch. Nach ihrem 2:6, 6:3, 6:3 gegen die Schweizerin steht Haddad Maia erstmals in einem Masters-Halbfinale und trifft dort auf die Tschechin Karolina Pliskova.
"Ich bin nicht so in die Partie gekommen, wie ich es wollte", sagte die 26 Jahre alte Südamerikanerin, "aber ich bin positiv geblieben. So ein Tennismatch ändert sich schnell." Haddad Maia setzt damit auch ihren Aufstieg in der Weltrangliste fort.
Durch den Einzug ins Halbfinale gehört sie ab Montag auf jeden Fall zum ersten Mal zu den Top 20. Sollte sie gar am Ende ihren dritten Turniersieg des Jahres auf der WTA-Tour nach Nottingham und Birmingham im Juni feiern, würde sie von Position 20 auf 14 klettern.
Wieder zurückkehren in die Top 10 könnte die ehemalige Nummer eins Simona Halep. Die Rumänin steht nach ihrem 6:4, 7:6 (7:2) gegen den an Nummer zehn gesetzten US-Jungstar Coco Gauff ebenfalls im Halbfinale. Ein Triumph in Toronto würde Halep von Rang 13 auf Position sechs bringen, vorbei auch an ihrer Halbfinal-Konkurrentin Jessica Pegula (USA).
