Vor Federer-Abschied: Europa führt beim Laver Cup mit 2:1
Casper Ruud und Stefanos Tsitsipas haben das Team Europa am letzten Arbeitstag von Roger Federer beim Laver Cup mit 2:1 in Führung gebracht. Der Norweger Ruud bezwang in London zunächst den Amerikaner Jack Sock mit 6:4, 5:7, 10:7, anschließend setzte sich Tsitsipas (Griechenland) gegen den Argentinier Diego Schwartzman locker mit 6:2, 6:1 durch. Im dritten Einzel verkürzte der Australier Alex de Minaur durch ein 5:7, 6:3, 10:7 gegen den Schotten Andy Murray.
Schwartzman musste in seinem Match indes einen Schreckmoment verkraften. Ein Klima-Aktivist rannte während des Matches auf den Platz, setzte sich und entzündete ein Feuer. Dabei steckte er seinen rechten Arm kurzzeitig in Brand. Sicherheitskräfte löschten das kleine Feuer und trugen den Aktivisten, der ein T-Shirt mit der Aufschrift "Schluss mit britischen Privatjets" trug, aus der Halle.
Knapp fünf Minuten später wurde das Match fortgesetzt. "Es kam aus heiterem Himmel", sagte Tsitsipas: "Ich habe keine Ahnung, was es damit auf sich hat. So etwas ist mir auf dem Platz noch nie passiert. Ich hoffe, es geht ihm gut."
Als Zuschauer auf der Spielerbank saß Federer (41), der am Abend im letzten Match seiner Karriere an der Seite von Rafael Nadal auf das US-Doppel Sock/Frances Tiafoe trifft.
Europa hat die bisherigen vier Auflagen des Duells gegen eine Auswahl der restlichen Welt allesamt gewonnen. Beim Laver Cup gibt es am ersten Tag für jeden Sieg einen, am zweiten zwei und am dritten Drei Punkte. Sieger ist, wer als erstes Team 13 Zähler holt.
