Volleyball-WM: DVV-Frauen trotz Niederlage vorzeitig weiter
Die deutschen Volleyballerinnen haben trotz einer Niederlage gegen Olympiasieger USA vorzeitig die zweite Gruppenphase der WM erreicht. Das Team von Bundestrainer Vital Heynen verlor beim deutlichen 0:3 (17:25, 13:25, 24:26) gegen den Topfavoriten im polnischen Lodz zwar zum zweiten Mal in Folge, der vierte Platz in der Sechsergruppe ist den DVV-Frauen aber vor dem abschließenden Duell mit Kanada am Samstag (16.00 Uhr) nicht mehr zu nehmen.
Gegen den Weltranglistenersten USA, der bei der WM erst einen Satz abgegeben hat, musste sich die deutsche Mannschaft wie schon beim 0:3 gegen Titelverteidiger Serbien tags zuvor der spielerischen Klasse geschlagen geben. Topscorerin der DVV-Auswahl, die im dritten Durchgang einen Satzball vergab, war Kimberly Drewniok mit acht Punkten. Die ersten beiden Spiele gegen Bulgarien (3:1) und Kasachstan (3:0) hatte die DVV-Auswahl gewonnen.
Weil sowohl Bulgarien als auch Kasachstan am Freitag auch ihr viertes Spiel verloren und somit die deutsche Mannschaft nicht mehr überholen können, kann das Heynen-Team schon jetzt für die zweite Gruppenphase planen. Diese wird vom 4. bis 9. Oktober in zwei Achtergruppen ausgespielt, die vier besten Teams jeder Gruppe erreichen das Viertelfinale. Die deutschen Frauen haben noch nie eine WM-Medaille gewonnen.
