Die Basketballerinnen aus den USA sind ihrer Favoritenrolle gerecht geworden und zum elften WM-Gold gestürmt. Der Rekordsieger setzte sich im Finale von Sydney mit 83:61 (43:33) gegen China durch und triumphierte zum vierten Mal in Serie. Damit sind die Olympiasiegerinnen bei Weltmeisterschaften seit 30 Spielen ohne Niederlage.
Nach der Demonstration im Halbfinale gegen überforderte Kanadierinnen (83:43) hatte das US-Team um Starspielerin Breanna Stewart im Superdome mit China nur anfangs leichte Probleme. Nach der Pause sorgte Kelsey Plum für die erste 20-Punkte-Führung (63:43/29. Minute), früh sorgte der Titelverteidiger um Topscorerin A'ja Wilson (19 Punkte) für klare Verhältnisse. Plum kam auf 17 Punkte.
Vor dem Endspiel hatte sich Australien im kleinen Finale gegen Kanada durch ein 95:65 (51:43) Bronze gesichert. Lauren Jackson, die mit ihrem 43. WM-Einsatz den Rekord einstellte, war mit 30 Punkten beste Werferin der Gastgeberinnen. Nach dem Spiel beendete die 41-Jährige ihre Karriere im Trikot der Opals.
