"Marsch der Lebenden" in Auschwitz gedenkt Holocaust-Opfern
Beim jährlichen "Marsch der Lebenden" im früheren nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau haben am Dienstag rund 10.000 Menschen an die Opfer des Holocaust erinnert. Am Vorabend des 80. Jahrestags des Aufstands im Warschauer Ghetto führten etwa 40 Holocaust-Überlebende die Gruppe aus Tausenden jungen Juden und Nichtjuden an.
Die Teilnehmer starteten am Eingangstor des Konzentrationslagers Auschwitz mit der berüchtigten Aufschrift "Arbeit macht frei" und legten die drei Kilometer nach Auschwitz-Birkenau, dem größten nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungslager, zu Fuß zurück. An dem Marsch nahmen auch der italienische Präsident Sergio Mattarella sowie der israelische Bildungsminister Yoav Kisch teil.
Am Mittwoch findet in Warschau das Gedenken an den Aufstand gegen die deutschen SS-Truppen im Warschauer Ghetto statt, der am 19. April 1943 begann. Dort werden der israelische Staatspräsident Isaac Herzog und Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier erwartet.
Das Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau ist ein zentrales Symbol des von Nazi-Deutschland begangenen Völkermords an sechs Millionen europäischen Juden. Rund eine Million von ihnen starben zwischen 1940 und 1945 in Auschwitz-Birkenau, viele von ihnen wurden zuvor im Warschauer Ghetto zusammengetrieben und deportiert. Das Lager, in dem auch etwa 80.000 nichtjüdische Polen, 25.000 Roma und 20.000 sowjetische Soldaten starben, wurde am 27. Januar 1945 von der Roten Armee befreit.
