Die europäische Trägerrakete Ariane 5 soll am Dienstagabend zum letzten Mal ins All starten. Für den Start von Kourou in Französisch-Guayana wurde ein Zeitfenster von 18.30 bis 20.05 Uhr Ortszeit (23.30 Uhr bis Mittwoch 01.05 Uhr MESZ) festgelegt. Auf ihrer letzten Mission soll die Ariane 5 den deutschen Kommunikationssatelliten Heinrich Hertz und einen französischen Militärsatelliten auf ihre Umlaufbahn bringen.
Ursprünglich hatte der Start Mitte Juni stattfinden sollen, war aber wegen technischer Probleme verschoben worden. In den vergangenen Jahren war die Rakete des europäischen Raumfahrtunternehmens Arianespace ein zuverlässiger Raumtransporter, der unter anderem das James-Webb-Teleskop der Nasa ins All brachte. Das Nachfolgemodell Ariane 6 wird frühestens Ende des Jahres einsatzbereit sein.
