Doch nicht ausgestorben: Forscher in Brasilien entdecken Baumart wieder
In Brasilien haben Wissenschaftler eine Baumart wiederentdeckt, die seit fast zwei Jahrhunderten als ausgestorben galt. Sie fanden den Ilex sapiiformis bei einer Expedition im nordöstlichen Bundesstaat Pernambuco ausgerechnet in einer Großstadt, wie eine Umweltgruppe am Dienstag mitteilte, die an dem von Hollywood-Star Leonardo DiCaprio mit gegründeten Projekt Re:wild beteiligt ist.
Der auch als Ilex von Pernambuco bekannte Baum wird acht bis zwölf Meter hoch. Zuletzt hatte der schottische Biologe George Gardner die Pflanze im Jahr 1838 wissenschaftlich beschrieben. Danach hatte die Pflanzenart als ausgestorben gegolten. Bei der Expedition wurden im März aber gleich vier Exemplare des Ilex sapiiformis entdeckt. Sie stehen am Ufer eines kleinen Flusses in der Stadt Igarassu in der Nähe der Metropole Recife.
Christina Biggs von Re:wild erklärte, es sei "unglaublich, dass der Ilex von Pernambuco in einer Metropolregion wiederentdeckt wurde, in der fast sechs Millionen Menschen leben". Expeditionsleiter Gustavo Martinelli kündigte an, er und die übrigen Expeditionsteilnehmer wollten nun versuchen, ein Zuchtprogramm für die lange verloren geglaubte Pflanze zu starten.
