Morre, aos 94 anos, o físico Peter Higgs, ganhador do Prêmio Nobel
O cientista britânico Peter Higgs, ganhador do Prêmio Nobel de Física em 2013 por seus trabalhos teóricos sobre o bóson de Higgs, conhecido como a "partícula de Deus" e considerado a chave da estrutura da matéria, morreu na segunda-feira aos 94 anos.
"Morreu pacificamente em sua casa na segunda-feira, 8 de abril, depois de uma curta enfermidade", informou a Universidade de Edimburgo em nota.
O físico foi autor em 1964 da teoria do bóson que depois levou seu nome e cuja demonstração prática demorou quase meio século.
A universidade, onde Higgs foi professor durante quatro décadas, o qualificou como "um grande professor e mentor, que inspirou gerações de jovens cientistas".
"Sua família pediu aos meios de comunicação e ao público que respeitem sua privacidade nesse momento", acrescentou.
Higgs recebeu o Prêmio Nobel de Física em 2013 ao lado do belga François Englert por seu trabalho em 1964 para sustentar as bases teóricas que levaram, décadas depois, à identificação do bóson em 2012 no laboratório europeu para a pesquisa nuclear, CERN, localizado na Suíça.
O bóson de Higgs é um elemento-chave da estrutura fundamental da matéria que atribui massa a todas as demais, segundo a teoria conhecida como "modelo-padrão".
Nos esforços para divulgar essa teoria a um público mais amplo, foi batizada como "partícula de Deus", já que está em todo lugar e, ao mesmo tempo, é esquiva.
