Die Chefin der Welthandelsorganisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, hat sich für den Welthandel als wichtigen Faktor zur Reduzierung der weltweiten Treibhausgasemissionen stark gemacht. Es sei falsch, den internationalen Warenaustausch nur als Quelle von Treibhausgasemissionen zu sehen, erklärte Okonjo-Iweala im Vorwort des am Montag veröffentlichten WTO-Jahresberichts. "Handel ist eine positive Kraft für das Klima und Teil der Lösung für einen kohlenstoffarmen, widerstandsfähigen und gerechten Übergang".
Zwar erzeuge der Handel selbst Emissionen durch Produktion und Transport, erklärte Okonjo-Iweala weiter. "Doch Handel und Handelspolitik können die Verbreitung von Spitzentechnologien und bewährten Verfahren beschleunigen, Anreize für weitere Innovationen schaffen und gleichzeitig die Arbeitsplätze von morgen schaffen."
Okonjo-Iweala verwies etwa auf den Rückgang der Kosten von Solaranlagen: "Etwa 40 Prozent des Kostenrückgangs wurden Skaleneffekten zugeschrieben, die zum Teil durch internationalen Handel und Wertschöpfungsketten ermöglicht wurden." Der Handel mit umweltfreundlichen Produkten müsse noch weiter ausgebaut werden, etwa durch das gezielte Absenken von Zöllen, forderte sie.
