Lula will Klimakonferenz 2025 in die Amazonas-Region holen
Der gewählte brasilianische Präsident Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will die UN-Klimakonferenz 2025 in die Amazonas-Region holen. "Wir werden mit dem UN-Generalsekretär sprechen und beantragen, dass die COP 2025 in Brasilien abgehalten wird", sagte Lula am Mittwoch bei einem ersten öffentlichen Auftritt auf der derzeit tagenden Klimakonferenz im ägyptischen Scharm el-Scheich. In Brasilien wiederum müsse die Konferenz "in der Amazonas-Region stattfinden".
Lula hat sich wiederholt für einen besseren Schutz des Regenwaldes in der Amazonas-Region ausgesprochen. Die Entwaldung dort hat unter dem noch amtierenden Präsidenten Jair Bolsonaro dramatisch zugenommen. Mit seinem Besuch in Scharm el-Scheich will Lula noch vor seinem Amtsantritt zum Jahreswechsel ein Zeichen für mehr Klimaschutz setzen. "Brasilien ist zurück in der Welt, um über die Klimafrage zu sprechen", schrieb er auf Twitter.
Bereits unmittelbar nach seiner Ankunft führte Lula Gespräche mit dem US-Klimabeauftragten John Kerry und Chinas Beauftragtem Xie Zenhua. Kerry sagte, die USA würden gemeinsam mit weiteren Staaten den Schutz des Regenwaldes am Amazonas unterstützen. Er sei dafür "richtig ermutigt" nach der Unterredung mit Lula. Dieser will am Nachmittag auf der Klimakonferenz eine Rede halten.
