Australien entfernt britische Monarchen von Geldscheinen
Australien wird künftig keine britischen Monarchen mehr auf Geldscheinen haben. Nach dem Tod von Elizabeth II. solle ihr Nachfolger Charles III. nicht auf Banknoten erscheinen, erklärte die Zentralbank am Donnerstag. Stattdessen solle auf der Fünf-Dollar-Banknote, auf der bisher die verstorbene Queen prangt, künftig ein Indigenen-Motiv abgebildet werden.
Die Entscheidung sei mit der Regierung abgestimmt worden, erklärte die Zentralbank. Sie räumte zugleich ein, dass die Umstellung und der Druck der neuen Geldscheine einige Jahre dauern werde. Zunächst solle mit Indigenen-Vertretern beraten werden, wie das Design genau aussehen könnte. Mit Einführung der neuen Fünf-Dollar-Note wird dann auf keiner australischen Banknote mehr ein britischer Monarch zu sehen sein.
Staatsoberhaupt von Australien ist auch heutzutage noch der jeweilige britische Monarch. Das Land diskutiert aber seit geraumer Zeit über eine mögliche Loslösung vom Königshaus. Der Tod von Elizabeth II. im September vergangenen Jahres hatte auch in Australien öffentliche Trauer ausgelöst. Indigene Gruppen protestierten aber zugleich gegen das Königshaus, sie machen die Monarchie mitverantwortlich für Kolonialverbrechen.
