Camilla trauert um britischen Drag-Queen-Pionier Paul O'Grady
Die britische Königsfamilie hat den Drag-Pionier Paul O'Grady gewürdigt, der im Alter von 67 Jahren gestorben ist. "Zutiefst traurig über den Tod von Paul O'Grady", hieß es am Mittwoch auf dem Twitter-Kanal der Royal Family. O'Grady, der nach Angaben seines Lebensgefährten Andre Portasio am Dienstag "unerwartet, aber friedlich" gestorben war, hatte mit seinem Alter Ego Lily Savage die Drag-Kultur in den 70er Jahren in Großbritannien salonfähig gemacht.
Als Drag-Queen trug O'Grady eine enorm voluminöse platinblonde Perücke und dazu figurbetonte Kleider. Nachdem er als Lily Savage zuerst durch Nachtclubs tourte, trat er später auch in Radio- und Fernsehshows in seiner Paraderolle auf und machte die Drag-Kultur im Vereinigten Königreich zum Mainstream. "Man kann gar nicht unterschätzen, was für ein Vorreiter er war", sagte ITV-Moderator Richard Arnold.
O'Grady kämpfte nicht nur für die Rechte sexueller Minderheiten, sondern machte sich auch für heimatlose Tiere stark. So moderierte er lange die Sendung "For the Love of Dogs", die aus dem Londoner Tierheim Battersea Dogs & Cats Home ausgestrahlt wurde. Im Dezember hatte er in einer Weihnachts-Sondersendung Königin Camilla zu Gast.
Ihre Begegnung damals sei von "viel Lachen und vielen Schwanzwedel-Erinnerungen" geprägt gewesen, teilte die Königsfamilie nun in ihrem Tweet mit. Bebildert wurde die Trauerbotschaft mit einem Foto von Camilla und O'Grady, die beide strahlen und einen Hund bei sich haben. Elizabeth II., die Mutter des heutigen Königs Charles III., hatte O'Grady 2008 für seine Verdienste in der Unterhaltungsbranche ausgezeichnet.
