Kanadischer Folk-Sänger Gordon Lightfoot stirbt im Alter von 84 Jahren
Der kanadische Folk-Sänger Gordon Lightfoot ist tot. Er sei am Montagabend im Alter von 84 Jahren in einem Krankenhaus in Toronto verstorben, heißt es in einem Beitrag auf Lightfoots offizieller Seite im Onlinedienst Facebook. Angaben zur Todesursache wurden zunächst nicht gemacht.
Lightfoot wurde in den 1960er- und 70er-Jahren international bekannt. Den Durchbruch als Autor schaffte er 1965 mit dem Titel "For Lovin' Me" für die Gruppe Peter, Paul and Mary. Er schrieb zudem Hits für Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Barbara Streisand und Elvis Presley.
Als Sänger war Lightfoot mit "If You Could Read My Mind", "Sundown" und "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" in den Charts vertreten. Ende der 90er Jahre konnte er mit "Gord's Gold" und "Shadows" ein überwältigendes Comeback feiern.
Bob Dylan bezeichnete Lightfoot einmal als einen seiner Lieblingskünstler. "Mir fallen keine (Songs) ein, die ich nicht mag." Lightfoot selbst war hingegen zurückhaltender. "Manchmal frage ich mich, warum ich als Ikone bezeichnet werde, weil ich mich wirklich nicht als solche ansehe", sagte er der kanadischen Zeitung "The Globe and Mail".
Lightfoot war bis zum vergangenen Monat auf Tournee. Im April sagte er allerdings seine Konzerttermine für das restliche Jahr ab. Er begründete dies damals mit nicht näher genannten gesundheitlichen Problemen.
Der Sender CBC würdigte Lightfoot in seinem Nachruf "wegen seiner gefühlvollen Musik und mitreißenden Texte" als "Kanadas Folk-Troubadour". Der Kanadier hinterlässt laut der Musikzeitschrift "Billboard" seine dritte Ehefrau Kim Hasse.
