El director de cine francés Laurent Cantet, Palma de Oro en 2008 con "La clase" y autor de películas rodadas en Cuba y Haití, falleció el jueves a los 63 años, informó su agente a AFP.
"Murió esta mañana en París a causa de una enfermedad", indicó Isabelle de la Patellière.
Autor de nueve largometrajes, Cantet trabajaba actualmente en un nuevo proyecto, "L'apprenti", cuyo estreno estaba previsto en 2025.
En 2012 participó en una obra colectiva, "Siete días en La Habana", junto a otros seis directores, entre ellos Benicio del Toro. La película plasmaba mediante siete episodios la vida cotidiana en la capital cubana.
Dos años después regresaba a La Habana para rodar "Regreso a Itaca", una película coral sobre los recuerdos de cinco amigos tras el retorno del exilio de uno de ellos, con Isabel Santos y Jorge Perugorría como parte del elenco.
"La clase" estaba ambientada en una escuela parisina y narraba, con aires de documental, el día a día de un profesor de francés, enfrentado a una clase de adolescentes rebeldes en un barrio conflictivo.
Otras películas conocidas de Laurent Cantet son "Recursos Humanos" (1999), sobre las relaciones laborales en el seno de una empresa francesa, y "Hacia el sur", ambientada en Haití y rodada en 2005 con Charlotte Rampling y Karen Young.
El Festival de Cannes, que arrancará el próximo 14 de mayo su 77ª edición, saludó en Cantet a un "humanista encarnizado, que buscaba la luz a pesar de la violencia social, que hallaba esperanza a pesar de la dureza de la realidad".
Era un director y guionista "cuya obra coherente y humanista dibuja un cine sensible, a flor de piel y a flor de sociedad", añadió el comunicado.
