Berliner Tageblatt - Reynolds jokes 'defibrillator' needed to watch new 'Welcome to Wrexham' series

Disney+ unveiled the official trailer on Tuesday for the fifth series of FX's Emmy award-winning show featuring Wrexham co-owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Since buying the Welsh club, the Hollywood duo have taken Wrexham from the fifth tier of English football to the brink of the elite Premier League following a remarkable three consecutive promotions.

"I think a defibrillator is the traditional fifth season gift?" Deadpool star Reynolds said on X in a reference to a device that helps people survive heart attacks and other life-threatening forms of cardiac arrest, as a trailer showed Wrexham preparing to play in the second-tier Championship.

"Would make sense for this show. @WrexhamFX returns May 14."

Earlier this month, it was announced that Welcome To Wrexham had been renewed for three more seasons, meaning the show -- which has already won a slew of entertainment awards, including 10 Emmys -- will run until at least 2029.

The series, which charts Wrexham's rise as well as featuring the people involved and the wider community, has resulted in a huge influx of American tourists into the north Wales town and has estimated to have doubled tourism income to £200 million ($270 million) a year.

The new series chronicles Wrexham's ongoing bid to get into the Premier League under manager Phil Parkinson and a new-look squad built mainly in pre-season.

Wrexham are at home to promotion rivals Middlesbrough on Saturday in their final game of the regular Championship season.

The Red Dragons currently occupy the final play-off position in sixth place and are potentially just four games away from playing in the Premier League.
