230 Grindwale an australischer Insel Tasmanien gestrandet
Mehrere hundert Grindwale sind am Mittwoch an der Westküste der australischen Insel Tasmanien gestrandet. "Eine Gruppe von etwa 230 Walen ist in der Nähe von Macquarie Harbour gestrandet", teilte das Umweltministerium des südlichen Bundesstaates Tasmanien mit. "Es scheint, dass etwa die Hälfte der Tiere noch am Leben ist." Den Behörden zufolge waren Experten und Retter auf dem Weg zu den Walen.
Am Montag waren bereits 14 männliche Pottwale an einem abgelegenen Strand Tasmaniens verendet. Forscher suchen nun nach der Ursache. "Der häufigste Grund für Strandungen sind Missgeschicke", sagte der Biologe Kris Carlyon von der staatlichen Naturschutzbehörde der Lokalzeitung "Mercury" am Mittwoch. Die Tiere könnten in Küstennähe auf Nahrungssuche gewesen und möglicherweise von einer Ebbe überrascht worden sein, sagte Carlyon.
Massenstrandungen von Walen seien in der Region "selten, aber (...) nicht überraschend", erklärte Carlyon.
Im Jahr 2020 waren an der Küste Tasmaniens 470 Wale gestrandet. Mehr als 300 Grindwale starben damals - trotz der Bemühungen Dutzender Freiwilliger, die Tiere zu retten. Auch der Grund für diese Massenstrandungen ist nach wie vor rätselhaft. Einige Experten vermuten, dass sich die Gruppe verirrt haben könnte, nachdem sie in Küstennähe Futter gefunden hatte.
