Astronaut Maurer erhält Bundesverdienstorden zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit
Der Astronaut Matthias Maurer wird am Freitag (11.00 Uhr) in Berlin anlässlich des Tags der Deutschen Einheit mit dem Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ausgezeichnet. Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier nimmt die Ehrung in seinem Amtssitz Schloss Bellevue vor. Neben dem 52-jährigen Maurer zeichnet der Bundespräsident weitere 20 Menschen aus.
Die Ehrungen stehen laut Bundespräsidialamt unter dem Motto "Brücken bauen" und gehen an Männer und Frauen, die sich in "herausragender Weise" an der Lösung globaler Herausforderungen beteiligen. Maurer ist Astronaut der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation ESA und verbrachte zuletzt mehrere Monate auf der internationalen Raumstation ISS. Neben Maurer wird auch der frühere Fußballstar Neven Subotic ausgezeichnet, der sich in Äthiopien humanitär engagiert.
