Mindestens 59 Tote durch Schneesturm in den USA
Durch den heftigen Schneesturm in den USA sind nach jüngsten Angaben mindestens 59 Menschen ums Leben gekommen. Alleine im Landkreis Erie County im Bundesstaat New York wurden 37 Todesopfer verzeichnet, wie die Behörden am Mittwoch mitteilten. In der Stadt Buffalo waren nach Angaben von Bürgermeister Byron Brown rund 500 Bewohner weiterhin ohne Strom.
Eine arktische Kaltfront mit Temperaturen bis zu minus 40 Grad Celsius hatte weite Teile der USA kurz vor Weihnachten ins Chaos gestürzt. Besonders dramatisch war die Lage in Buffalo und den umliegenden Gebieten im Landkreis Erie County. Mehrere Tote wurden in ihren Autos oder unter Schneewehen gefunden.
Angesichts nun steigender Temperaturen warnten die Behörden am Mittwoch vor Tauwetter. "Wenn die Temperaturen zunehmen, erwarten wir, dass der Schnee schmilzt und es zu möglichen Überschwemmungen durch schnelles Schmelzen kommt", sagte der Verwaltungschef von Erie County, Mark Poloncarz.
Der Schneesturm sorgt seit Tagen auch für Chaos im Flugverkehr. Besonders betroffen ist die Fluggesellschaft Southwest Airlines, die am Mittwoch mehr als 2500 weitere Flüge streichen musste.
