Der New Yorker Bürgermeister will psychisch kranke Obdachlose zwangseinweisen lassen und so die Kriminalität in der US-Metropole weiter bekämpfen. "Wenn eine schwere psychische Erkrankung dazu führt, dass jemand obdachlos ist und eine Gefahr für sich selbst darstellt, haben wir die moralische Verpflichtung, ihm zu helfen", sagte Bürgermeister Eric Adams am Dienstag.
Polizei, medizinische Fachkräfte und Sozialarbeiter sollen demnach künftig Obdachlose, bei denen sie psychische Probleme vermuten, gegen deren Willen einweisen können. Über eine entsprechende rechtliche Regelung soll laut Adams nächstes Jahr beraten werden.
"Das allgemeine Missverständnis, dass wir keine unfreiwillige Hilfe leisten können, wenn die Person nicht gewalttätig (...) ist, hält sich hartnäckig", sagte Adams. "Dieser Mythos muss aus der Welt geschafft werden." In New York City leben schätzungsweise 50.000 Obdachlose.
Adams, ein ehemaliger Polizist und Vertreter der Demokratischen Partei von US-Präsident Joe Biden, hat den Kampf gegen Gewaltkriminalität zu einem seiner wichtigsten Anliegen erklärt.
