Bereits mehr als 11.200 Erdbeben-Tote in der Türkei und Syrien
Nach dem verheerenden Erdbeben im türkisch-syrischen Grenzgebiet hat die Opferzahl in den beiden Ländern die Marke von 10.000 Toten mittlerweile deutlich überschritten: Wie am Mittwoch aus Angaben von Behörden und Rettungskräften hervorging, wurden nach der Katastrophe vom Montag bereits mehr als 11.200 Todesopfer gezählt. Wie der türkische Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan mitteilte, wurden in seinem Land bereits 8574 Todesopfer gezählt. Weitere 2662 Todesfälle wurden aus Syrien bestätigt.
Das Erdbeben der Stärke 7,8 hatte das türkisch-syrische Grenzgebiet am frühen Montagmorgen getroffen. In den Stunden danach trafen die Region noch mehr als 50 Nachbeben.
Mit einem weiteren deutlichen Anstieg der Opferzahlen wird gerechnet - etliche Menschen sind bei eisigen Temperaturen noch verschüttet. Der Chef der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, sprach von einem "Wettlauf gegen die Zeit". Nach Einschätzung der WHO könnten bis zu 23 Millionen Menschen in der Türkei und Syrien von den Folgen des Bebens betroffen sein.
