Franziskus will Ende August in die Mongolei reisen
Papst Franziskus will Ende August zu einem historischen Besuch in die Mongolei reisen. Wie der Vatikan am Samstag mitteilte, ist die Reise vom 31. August bis 4. September geplant. Bisher hat noch nie ein Papst das mehrheitlich buddhistische Land besucht.
Die Zahl der Katholikinnen und Katholiken in der Mongolei wird auf gerade einmal 1500 geschätzt. Es handelt sich um eine der weltweit kleinsten katholischen Gemeinden. Der Vatikan unterhält seit 1992 diplomatische Beziehungen zu dem ostasiatischen Land.
Franziskus hat seit seinem Amtsantritt im Jahr 2013 bereits 41 Auslandsreisen absolviert und dabei rund 60 Länder besucht. Allerdings leidet er schon seit längerem unter gesundheitlichen Beschwerden. Wegen starker Knieschmerzen nutzte der Papst zuletzt immer wieder einen Rollstuhl. Ende März verbrachte der Papst wegen einer Atemwegsinfektion drei Nächte in einem Krankenhaus in Rom.
