Ein Buschbrand hat mehrere der weltberühmten Steinstatuen auf der Osterinsel verkohlt. Von dem Feuer seien rund 100 Hektar Land betroffen, darunter mehrere der als Moai bekannten riesigen Steinköpfe, schrieb die chilenische Vize-Kulturministerin Carolina Perez am Donnerstag (Ortszeit) auf Twitter. Die schwersten Schäden gab es nach ihren Angaben im Gebiet des zum Unesco-Welterbe gehörenden Rano Raraku-Vulkans, wo hunderte Moai stehen.
"Der Schaden kann nicht wiedergutgemacht werden", sagte der Bürgermeister der Osterinsel, Pedro Edmunds, Lokalmedien.
Die Osterinsel liegt abgelegen rund 3500 Kilometer westlich der chilenischen Küste. Erst Anfang August war sie nach zweijähriger Corona-Sperrung wieder für den Tourismus geöffnet worden. Vor Beginn der Corona-Pandemie zählte die Insel jährlich rund 160.000 Besucher.
