Wolfspeed und ZF planen Gigafabrik für Siliziumkarbid-Halbleiter im Saarland
Der US-Konzern Wolfspeed und das deutsche Unternehmen ZF wollen im saarländischen Ensdorf eine neue Gigafabrik für Siliziumkarbid-Halbleiter aufbauen. "Wir wollen mit der geplanten weltweit größten und modernsten Fabrik für Halbleiter aus Siliziumkarbid Geschichte schreiben", sagte Wolfspeed-Vorstandschef Gregg Lowe am Mittwoch dort bei der Vorstellung des Projekts unter Federführung seines Unternehmens. Geplant ist zudem der gemeinsame Aufbau eines neuen Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrums unter Führung von ZF.
An der Vorstellung des Projekts nahmen Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz (SPD) und Wirtschaftsminister Robert Habeck (Grüne) teil. "Viel spricht dafür, dass Halbleitern aus Siliziumkarbid die Zukunft gehört", sagte Scholz. "Die neue Chipfabrik wird einen deutlichen Beitrag dazu leisten, dass die europäische Wirtschaft verlässlich mit Halbleitern versorgt wird." Habeck verwies auf die jüngsten Lieferengpässe bei Halbleitern. "Wir brauchen die Halbleiter schnell", sagte er und äußerte daher die Hoffnung, dass in Ensdorf "die Produktion möglichst schnell beginnt".
