EU-Kommission genehmigt staatliche Mittel für Kernenergie-Forschung in Frankreich
Frankreich darf die Entwicklung sogenannter kleiner modularer Kernreaktoren (SMR) finanziell unterstützen. Die französische Regierung erhielt am Freitag grünes Licht der EU-Kommission für eine staatliche Beihilfe im Umfang von 300 Millionen Euro für entsprechende Projekte des Unternehmens Nuward, einer Tochterfirma des Energiekonzerns EDF. Aus beihilferechtlicher Sicht gebe es keine Einwände, erklärte die Brüsseler Behörde. Außerdem entspreche das Vorhaben den EU-Klimazielen.
SMR sind kleiner und weniger leistungsstark als herkömmliche Atomreaktoren für Kraftwerke. Dafür sind sie flexibler einsetzbar und weniger investitionsintensiv. Bislang sind sie nur in Russland im Betrieb. Bauprojekte gibt es aber etwa in Argentinien, Kanada, China und Südkorea. Das Nuward-Projekt in Frankreich soll ab 2030 in die Umsetzungsphase gehen.
Auf besonderen Druck von Ländern wie Österreich und Luxemburg, aber auch Deutschland, war die Kernenergie auf EU-Ebene lange nicht als grüne Technologie eingestuft und daher nur schwer staatlich zu fördern. In den vergangenen zwei Jahren haben sich die Atom-Befürworter und insbesondere Frankreich in der Frage jedoch durchgesetzt: Die EU-Kommission passte ihre Vorgaben entsprechend an.
Anfang Februar dieses Jahres erkannte die Brüsseler Behörde offiziell "den potenziellen Beitrag von SMR zur Verwirklichung der Energie- und Klimaziele des europäischen Grünen Deals an". Es würden "alle CO2-freien und CO2-armen Lösungen" benötigt, um die EU-Klimaziele zu erreichen, erklärte sie.
