Tennisstar Novak Djokovic zu Ehrenbürger von Kleinstadt in Montenegro ernannt
Knapp zwei Wochen nach seiner Ausweisung aus Australien wegen fehlender Corona-Impfung ist der serbische Tennisstar Novak Djokovic zum Ehrenbürger einer kleinen Stadt in Montenegro ernannt worden. Vor dem Rathaus des Adria-Badeortes Budva versammelten sich am Freitag hunderte Menschen, um Djokovic zu empfangen und dem 34-Jährigen ihre Unterstützung auszudrücken. "Budva steht hinter Novak", stand auf einem Spruchband zu lesen.
Während Djokovic sich einen Weg durch die Menge bahnte, rief diese "Nole, Nole", seinen Spitznamen auf dem Balkan. Bürgermeister Marko Carevic überreichte dem Sportler die Ehrenbürger-Urkunde. "Sie haben mit Ihren Anstrengungen und Ihrer Arbeit gezeigt, wie man für die Familie und das Volk kämpft", sagte der Bürgermeister zu Djokovic.
Der Stadtrat hatte die Ehrenbürgerwürde für Djokovic außer mit seinen sportlichen Erfolgen auch mit seinem sozialen Engagement begründet: "Neben seinen außerordentlichen sportlichen Erfolgen ist Novak Djokovic ein anerkannter Humanist und Philanthrop", hieß es.
Mit Medienvertretern sprach Djokovic, der von seinen Eltern begleitet wurde, in Budva nicht. Der Tennisspieler war am 17. Januar in die serbische Hauptstadt Belgrad heimgekehrt. Zuvor war er nach einem juristischen Gezerre aus Australien ausgewiesen worden, wo er in Melbourne zum zehnten Mal die Australian Open hatte gewinnen und damit als erster Tennisspieler 21 Grand-Slam-Titel hatte erringen wollen.
Wie im gesamten Balkan ist Djokovic äußerst beliebt in Montenegro, wo er 2014 geheiratet hatte. Der Sportler ist bereits Ehrenbürger von Niksic, einer anderen montenegrinischen Stadt. Während des Rechtsstreits über seinen Aufenthalt in Australien hatten in Montenegro mehrere Solidaritätskundgebungen für Djokovic stattgefunden.
Der Sportler ist als Impf-Skeptiker bekannt. Er war nach Australien gereist, obwohl die Einreise dort nur vollständig geimpften Ausländern erlaubt ist. Der Serbe berief sich auf eine medizinische Ausnahmegenehmigung, die von den australischen Behörden jedoch nicht anerkannt wurde.
