US-Regierung will verschuldete Hochschulabsolventen entlasten
Die US-Regierung will Hochschulabsolventen einen Teil ihrer Studienkredite erlassen. Profitieren sollen ehemalige Studierende, die weniger als 125.000 Dollar im Jahr verdienen, wie Präsident Joe Biden am Mittwoch im Onlinedienst Twitter mitteilte. Ihnen sollen 10.000 Dollar erlassen werden, sofern sie kein Bundesstipendium bekommen haben. Ehemalige Studentinnen und Studenten, die Unterstützung über das sogenannte Pell-Grant-Programm für besonders Bedürftige erhalten haben, sollen um 20.000 Dollar entlastet werden.
Biden kündigte zudem an, dass Studienkredite erst ab dem kommenden Jahr weiter abbezahlt werden müssen. Ein entsprechendes Moratorium solle bis zum Ende des laufenden Jahres verlängert werden. Es war im Zuge der Corona-Pandemie eingeführt worden.
Ein Studium kostet in den Vereinigten Staaten oft enorme Summen. Die Hochschulen verlangen häufig zwischen 10.000 bis 70.000 Dollar pro Jahr, so dass viele Studenten Kredite aufnehmen müssen. Schätzungen der Regierung zufolge startet der durchschnittliche Universitätsabsolvent mit 25.000 Dollar Schulden ins Berufsleben. Es dauert meist Jahre oder gar Jahrzehnte, um die Kredite abzuzahlen.
Rund 45 Millionen Bürger in den USA haben nach Angaben des Weißen Hause Schulden aus den Universitätsgebühren. Ihre Studienschulden belaufen sich demnach auf insgesamt 1,6 Billionen Dollar.
