Bundesverdienstkreuz für früheren RKI-Chef Wieler und ehemaligen PEI-Leiter Cichutek
Der in der Coronapandemie häufig öffentlich aufgetretene ehemalige Präsident des Robert-Koch-Instituts (RKI), Lothar Wieler, erhält das Verdienstkreuz erster Klasse des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Wieler wird am Donnerstag kommender Woche von Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier im Schloss Bellevue ausgezeichnet, wie das Bundespräsidialamt am Mittwoch in Berlin mitteilte. Mit ihm geehrt wird der zum Jahreswechsel in den Ruhestand verabschiedete ehemalige Leiter des Paul-Ehrlich-Instituts (PEI), Klaus Cichutek.
In der Hochphase der Coronapandemie beschrieb Wieler für das RKI in zahlreichen Pressekonferenzen die Entwicklung der Infektionslage und gab der Bevölkerung Verhaltenshinweise. Wieler gab zum 1. April vergangenen Jahres sein Amt auf und wechselte zum Hasso-Plattner-Institut in Potsdam. Cichutek war als PEI-Leiter ebenfalls im Zusammenhang mit der Corona-Pandemie regelmäßig in die Öffentlichkeit getreten. Das Institut ist die zentrale Behörde für Impfstoffe in Deutschland.
