Erster Todesfall im Zusammenhang mit Affenpocken in den USA
Die USA haben ihren ersten Todesfall im Zusammenhang mit den Affenpocken registriert. Die Gesundheitsbehörden des Bundesstaates Texas bestätigten am Dienstag den Tod eines mit den Affenpocken infizierten Patienten. Der Erwachsene, dessen Geschlecht nicht genannt wurde, war demnach bereits zuvor stark immungeschwächt. Die Behörden wollen nun nach eigenen Angaben untersuchen, "welche Rolle die Affenpocken bei dem Todesfall spielten".
Auch Jennifer McQuiston von der US-Gesundheitsbehörde CDC erklärte, es müsse nun geprüft werden, ob die Affenpocken bei dem Todesfall eine Rolle gespielt hätten oder nicht. "Es ist wichtig zu betonten, dass Todesfälle aufgrund der Affenpocken zwar möglich, aber sehr selten sind." Bei mehr als 40.000 Infektionsfällen des derzeitigen Ausbruchs weltweit habe es nur eine "Handvoll" Tote gegeben, sagte McQuiston.
Bei den Affenpocken handelt sich um eine weniger gefährliche Verwandte der seit etwa 40 Jahren ausgerotteten Pocken. Die Krankheit trat jahrzehntelang vor allem in manchen west- und zentralafrikanischen Ländern auf. Seit Mai aber wurde sie auch außerhalb Afrikas vermehrt registriert. Allein in den USA sind bislang mehr als 18.000 Fälle gemeldet worden.
Zu den typischen Symptomen der Krankheit gehören hohes Fieber, geschwollene Lymphknoten und Windpocken-ähnliche Pusteln. Übertragen wird die Krankheit durch engen Körper- und Hautkontakt.
