Die Zahl der Passagiere auf Kreuzfahrtschiffen in der Europäischen Union ist im Corona-Jahr 2020 massiv eingebrochen. So starteten 2020 in der EU insgesamt rund 530.000 Passagiere eine Kreuzfahrt, das waren 93 Prozent weniger als im Vorjahr, wie das Statistische Bundesamt am Dienstag mitteilte. 2019 hatte die Kreuzfahrtindustrie noch eine Rekordpassagierzahl verzeichnet - 7,4 Millionen Menschen bestiegen damals ein Kreuzfahrtschiff.
2019 war damit der Höhepunkt eines lang anhaltenden Trends - im Jahr 2014 machten lediglich knapp 4,8 Millionen Menschen Urlaub auf einem Kreuzfahrtschiff. Die meisten Urlauber kamen 2020 in Spanien an Bord, hier starteten 42 Prozent der Passagiere ihre Reise.
Auf deutsche Kreuzfahrthäfen an Nord- und Ostsee entfielen rund 54.000 Passagiere, das entsprach zehn Prozent der Urlauber auf Kreuzfahrtschiffen in der EU. Auch Deutschland verzeichnete somit im Vorjahresvergleich ein deutliches Minus: 2019 starteten noch 1,3 Millionen Menschen eine Kreuzfahrt in Deutschland, das waren 96 Prozent mehr als im Pandemie-Jahr 2020.
