Für Weltbank-Spitze nominierter Ajay Banga hat keinen Gegenkandidaten
Der von den USA als neuer Weltbank-Präsident nominierte frühere Mastercard-Chef Ajay Banga hat keinen Gegenkandidaten und dürfte damit bald die Spitze der internationalen Finanzinstitution übernehmen. Wie die Weltbank am Donnerstag mitteilte, gingen bis Einsendeschluss am Vorabend keine weiteren Nominierungen ein.
"Gemäß der geltenden Prozeduren werden die Exekutivdirektoren ein formelles Bewerbungsgespräch mit dem Kandidaten in Washington führen", erklärte die Finanzinstitution mit Sitz in der US-Hauptstadt. Das Auswahlverfahren für die Weltbankspitze solle "fristgemäß" abgeschlossen werden. Ein genauer Zeitplan ist nicht bekannt, eine endgültige Entscheidung könnte aber im Mai fallen.
US-Präsident Joe Biden hatte Banga Ende Februar für den Posten vorgeschlagen. Der 63-jährige frühere Chef des Zahlungsdienstleisters Mastercard - ein in Indien geborener US-Bürger - soll den derzeitigen Weltbank-Präsidenten David Malpass ablösen.
Der Präsident der Weltbank, deren zentrale Mission der Kampf gegen die Armut ist, kommt traditionell aus den USA. Der ebenfalls in Washington ansässige Internationale Währungsfonds (IWF) wird dagegen traditionell von einem Europäer oder einer Europäerin geführt.
Malpass hatte im Februar überraschend seinen Rücktritt angekündigt. Er wird den Posten Ende Juni und damit knapp ein Jahr vor dem eigentlichen Ende seiner Amtszeit räumen. Der durch den früheren US-Präsidenten Donald Trump nominierte Malpass hatte im vergangenen Jahr mit Äußerungen zum Klimawandel Kritik auf sich gezogen.
