Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz (SPD) sieht die Gefahr einer atomaren Eskalation im Ukraine-Krieg gesunken. "Russland hat aufgehört, mit dem Einsatz von Atomwaffen zu drohen", sagte Scholz der Funke-Mediengruppe (Donnerstagsausgaben) und der französischen Zeitung "Ouest-France". Dies sei eine "Reaktion darauf, dass die internationale Gemeinschaft eine rote Linie markiert hat".
Auf die Nachfrage, ob die Gefahr einer atomaren Eskalation abgewendet ist, sagte Scholz: "Für den Augenblick haben wir einen Pflock dagegen eingeschlagen."
Der Kanzler rief Moskau erneut auf, den Krieg sofort zu beenden und die Truppen aus der Ukraine zurückzuziehen. Er zeigte sich zugleich bereit, "mit Russland über Rüstungskontrolle in Europa zu sprechen". Dies sei Moskau bereits vor dem Krieg angeboten worden - "und an dieser Position hat sich nichts geändert".
Zugleich verteidigte Scholz die Hilfe für Kiew. "Deutschland gehört nach den USA zu den Ländern, die die Ukraine am stärksten unterstützen, auch mit Waffen", sagte er. Dabei handele die Bundesregierung immer in enger Absprache mit den Verbündeten. "Übrigens hat niemand Kampfpanzer westlicher Bauart geliefert", fügte der Kanzler hinzu.
Russlands Präsident Wladimir Putin hatte am Mittwoch gesagt, dass Moskau Atomwaffen nur als Reaktion auf einen Angriff einsetzen würde. "Wir betrachten Massenvernichtungswaffen, Atomwaffen, als ein Mittel der Verteidigung", sagte der Kreml-Chef.
