Baerbock warnt vor Folgen des Brexit für Frieden in Nordirland
Bundesaußenministerin Annalena Baerbock (Grüne) hat vor den Folgen des Brexit für den Frieden in Nordirland gewarnt. Der durch das Karfreitagsabkommen erreichte Frieden "darf auf keinen Fall aufs Spiel gesetzt werden", sagte Baerbock am Donnerstag vor ihrer Reise nach Irland und Großbritannien. "Genau das droht aber durch den Brexit und seine Folgen bei Handel, Freizügigkeit und anderen Themen." Die Mitgliedstaaten der EU und das Vereinigte Königreich trügen Verantwortung dafür, das Nordirland-Protokoll zu erhalten und umzusetzen.
Nordirland befindet sich derzeit wegen des zwischen London und der EU ausgehandelten Protokolls in einer politischen Patt-Situation. Mit der Vereinbarung bleibt Nordirland Teil des Europäischen Binnenmarktes, wodurch eine De-facto-Zollgrenze mit der Insel Großbritannien entsteht. Nordirlands Unionisten finden das inakzeptabel, sie fürchten um die Zugehörigkeit Nordirlands zum Vereinigten Königreich.
Die Grenze zwischen Nordirland und dem EU-Mitglied Irland muss gemäß dem Karfreitagsabkommen aus dem Jahr 1998 offen bleiben. Das Abkommen hatte damals den drei Jahrzehnte währenden Nordirland-Konflikt beendet.
Am Donnerstag trifft Baerbock in Dublin mit ihrem irischen Kollegen Simon Coveney zusammen. Am Freitag reist die Ministerin dann zu ihrem Antrittsbesuch nach Großbritannien und trifft dabei auch ihren Kollegen James Cleverly.
Der britische Außenminister Cleverly rief vor Baerbocks Besuch zu Kompromissen im Streit um das Nordirland-Protokoll auf. Der Konservative forderte die Bundesregierung in der Zeitung "Welt" vom Donnerstag auf, die im Ampel-Koalitionsvertrag festgeschriebene Forderung einer vollständigen Umsetzung des Protokolls zu überdenken. Er könne "womöglich einen Weg aufzeigen, wie wir das Karfreitagsabkommen und den EU-Binnenmarkt auf praktische und weniger puristische, theoretische Weise schützen", sagte Cleverly der "Welt".
