Die Klima-Aktivistengruppe Extinction Rebellion hat einen vorläufigen Stopp ihrer spektakulären Blockadeaktionen in Großbritannien verkündet. Statt sich weiter auf Straßen zu kleben und den Verkehr zu blockieren, wolle sich die Gruppe auf die Organisation einer für April geplanten Großdemo für eine aktivere Klimapolitik konzentrieren, erklärte sie am Sonntag.
Extinction Rebellion habe entschieden, "sich vorübergehend von der Störung des öffentlichen Raums als wichtigster Taktik" zu verabschieden. Stattdessen solle mehr Druck auf die Politik gemacht werden, um die Nutzung fossiler Brennstoffe zu beenden. Am 21. April ist demnach eine Großdemo mit 100.000 Teilnehmern vor dem Parlament in London geplant.
Extinction Rebellion wurde 2018 gegründet. Mit ihren Aktionen haben die Mitglieder der Gruppe, die sich an Straßen oder Flugzeuge klebten und im August die Londoner Tower Bridge blockierten, die konservative Regierung und Teile der Bevölkerung gegen sich aufgebracht. Zahlreiche Aktivisten wurden bei diversen Protestaktionen festgenommen.
Inzwischen bildeten sich mehrere noch radikalere Aktivistengruppen wie Just Stop Oil und Insulate Britain, die beispielsweise den Autobahnring rund um London lahmlegten und das Meisterwerk "Sonnenblumen" von Vincent van Gogh mit Suppe bewarfen.
