Präsidentschaftswahl in Zypern
Auf der geteilten Mittelmeer-Insel Zypern wird am Sonntag ein neuer Präsident gewählt. Die größten Siegeschancen haben Umfragen zufolge der frühere Außenminister Nikos Christodoulides, der von der linken Opposition unterstützte Andreas Mavroyiannis und der konservative Parteichef Averof Neofytou. Demnach zeichnet sich zwischen den Spitzenkandidaten ein knappes Rennen ab. Eine Entscheidung dürfte daher erst in einer Stichwahl am 12. Februar fallen.
Gewählt wird der Nachfolger des 76-jährigen Nicos Anastasiades von der konservativen Regierungspartei. Der Präsident ist in Zypern Staatsoberhaupt und Regierungschef in einem. Als wahlentscheidende Themen gelten neben den gestiegenen Lebenshaltungskosten infolge des Ukraine-Krieges der Kampf gegen die Korruption und die seit Jahren stockenden Friedensgespräche im Konflikt mit dem türkisch kontrollierten Norden.
