Putin besucht erstmals seit Kriegsbeginn Mariupol
Russlands Präsident Wladimir Putin hat erstmals seit der russischen Invasion der Ukraine die von Russland eroberte Hafenstadt Mariupol besucht. Angaben aus dem Kreml vom Sonntag zufolge flog Putin mit einem Helikopter in die durch russische Bombardements weitgehend zerstörte Stadt und unternahm vor Ort mit dem Auto eine Stadttour. Der Kreml-Chef sprach demnach mit Einwohnern Mariupols und ließ sich über die Wiederaufbauarbeiten informieren.
Am Samstag hatte Putin bereits anlässlich des neunten Jahrestags ihrer Annexion die ukrainische Halbinsel Krim besucht.
Mariupol am Asowschen Meer war seit Beginn des Krieges Ende Februar 2022 unablässig von Russland bombardiert und belagert worden. Am 21. April verkündete Moskau die Einnahme der Hafenstadt. Rund 2000 ukrainische Kämpfer verschanzten sich danach fast einen Monat lang im weitläufigen Stahlwerk Asowstal in Mariupol, bevor die Regierung sie im Mai aufforderte, sich den Russen zu ergeben, um ihr Leben zu retten. Nach Angaben Kiews wurden 90 Prozent der Stadt zerstört und mindestens 20.000 Menschen getötet.
