Netanjahu kündigt "Pause" bei umstrittener Justizreform an
Nach wochenlangen Massenprotesten hat Israels Regierungschef Benjamin Netanjahu eine "Pause" bei der von seiner rechtsreligiösen Regierung vorangetriebenen umstrittenen Justizreform angekündigt. Die endgültige Verabschiedung der einzelnen Gesetzesprojekte der Justizreform solle erst nach Beginn der neuen Parlamentsperiode Mitte April stattfinden, sagte Netanjahu am Montagabend in einer Fernsehansprache. Zuvor hatten Kritiker und Präsident Isaac Herzog eine Unterbrechung des Gesetzgebungsverfahrens gefordert.
Die Pläne der Regierung zum Umbau der Justiz sorgen seit Wochen für Massenproteste. Das Vorhaben zielt darauf ab, die Befugnisse der Justiz und des Obersten Gerichts einzuschränken und die Stellung des Parlaments und des Ministerpräsidenten zu stärken. Netanjahu, gegen den ein Prozess wegen Korruption läuft, stellt die Reform als notwendig dar, um das Gleichgewicht in der Gewaltenteilung wiederherzustellen. Kritiker befürchten hingegen eine Aufhebung der Gewaltenteilung und eine Aushöhlung der Demokratie in Israel.
Zuletzt hatte Netanjahu seinen Verteidigungsminister Joav Gallant entlassen, nachdem dieser eine Unterbrechung des Gesetzgebungsverfahrens gefordert hatte. Daraufhin waren am Montag erneut zehntausende Israelis gegen die Regierungspläne auf die Straße gegangen, die größte Gewerkschaft des Landes rief am Montag zum Generalstreik auf.
