US-Außenminister Antony Blinken reist kommende Woche nach Saudi-Arabien. Wie das Außenministerium in Washington am Freitag mitteilte, soll der Besuch von Dienstag bis Donnerstag andauern. Zu den Themen der Gespräche Blinkens sollen Bemühungen zur Beendigung des Bürgerkriegs im Jemen sowie eine mögliche Normalisierung der Beziehungen zwischen Saudi-Arabien und Israel gehören. Washington wie Riad sind zudem derzeit Vermittler bei Verhandlungen im saudiarabischen Dschiddah zu einer Beendigung der Kämpfe im Sudan zwischen der Regierung und der paramilitärischen RSF-Miliz.
Wie das Außenministerium in Washington mitteilte, soll es bei Blinkens Besuch unter anderem um die "wirtschaftliche und sicherheitspolitische Zusammenarbeit" zwischen beiden Ländern gehen.
Die USA und Saudi-Arabien sind seit Jahrzehnten miteinander verbündet, in den vergangenen Jahren hatten sich die Beziehungen aber erheblich eingetrübt. Washington hat Riad wiederholt Menschenrechtsverletzungen vorgeworfen, die Ermordung des regierungskritischen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi im saudiarabischen Konsulat in Istanbul im Jahr 2018 überschattet das Verhältnis weiterhin. Zudem reagierte Washington verärgert auf die Erhöhung der Erdölpreise durch Saudi-Arabien, die in Absprache mit Russland erfolgt war.
Nach einem Besuch von US-Präsident Joe Biden in Saudi-Arabien im vergangenen Juli hatte es jedoch Signale der Entspannung gegeben. US-Regierungsvertreter hatten zuletzt ihre Hoffnung auf eine weitere Verbesserung geäußert.
