US-Wahlkampf: Biden zu Debatte mit Trump bereit - Zeit und Ort unklar
US-Präsident Joe Biden hat seine grundsätzliche Bereitschaft zu einer Debatte mit seinem Herausforderer Donald Trump signalisiert. "Ich bin gerne bereit, mit ihm zu diskutieren", sagte Biden dem Radiomoderator Howard Stern am Freitag. Er wisse allerdings noch nicht wann oder wo, fügte Biden hinzu.
Es ist das erste Mal, dass der Präsident sich klar zu einer Debatte mit Trump im laufenden Präsidentschaftswahlkampf bereit erklärt. Bidens Team hatte sich monatelang nicht zu dem Thema geäußert.
Der ehemalige US-Präsident Trump hatte Anfang März erklärt, er sei "jederzeit und überall" bereit, mit Biden zu debattieren. Während der republikanischen Vorwahlen hatte Trump allerdings jegliche Debatten mit innerparteilichen Kontrahenten verweigert.
Trumps Wahlkampfberater Chris LaCivita reagierte umgehend auf Bidens Aussage. "Okay, lasst es uns auf die Beine stellen", schrieb er im Onlinedienst X.
Trump steht als Präsidentschaftskandidat der Republikaner so gut wie fest. Die USA steuern damit auf einen erneuten Kampf um das Weiße Haus zwischen Joe Biden und Donald Trump zu.
Die Aussicht auf eine Wiederholung des Duells des Jahres 2020 löst laut Umfragen bei den US-Wählern wenig Begeisterung aus - was unter anderem daran liegt, dass der amtierende Präsident Biden 81 und Ex-Präsident Trump 77 Jahre alt ist.
Umfragen zufolge hat Trump trotz seiner von Skandalen geprägten Präsidentschaft von 2017 bis 2021, der Kapitol-Erstürmung durch hunderte seiner Anhänger am 6. Januar 2021 und der vier gegen ihn erhobenen Anklagen in Strafverfahren keine schlechten Chancen, Biden im November zu besiegen.
