Die Wahl eines neuen Staatspräsidenten im Libanon ist vorerst gescheitert. Die Mehrheit der Abgeordneten des Parlaments gab am Donnerstag leere Stimmzettel ab. Der Kandidat mit den meisten Stimmen, der christliche Politiker Michel Moawad, verfehlte die notwendige Mehrheit deutlich. Mehrere Parlamentarier verließen den Saal nach dem ersten Wahlgang, sodass kein zweiter Wahlgang vorgenommen werden konnte. Parlamentspräsident Nabih Berri sagte, er werde eine weitere Sitzung einberufen, sobald "eine Einigung über den nächsten Präsidenten erzielt ist".
Der Libanon befindet sich seit 2019 in einer der schlimmsten Wirtschaftskrisen in der Geschichte des Landes. Die Landeswährung verlor auf dem Schwarzmarkt mehr als 95 Prozent ihres Wertes. Armut und Arbeitslosigkeit haben zuletzt stark zugenommen.
Bereits die Wahl des scheidenden Präsidenten Michel Aoun im Jahr 2016 fand nach einer 29-monatigen Vakanz statt. Die Parlamentarier hatten 45 Mal vergeblich versucht, einen Konsens über einen Kandidaten zu erzielen.
