USA sehen grundsätzliches "Risiko" eines russischen Atomwaffen-Angriffs
Die USA halten einen russischen Einsatz von Atomwaffen im Ukraine-Krieg für möglich, sehen derzeit aber keine Anzeichen für einen unmittelbar bevorstehenden Angriff dieser Art. Der Nationale Sicherheitsberater im Weißen Haus, Jake Sullivan, sagte am Freitag, es gebe angesichts des "atomaren Säbelrasselns" des russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin das "Risiko", dass der Kreml-Chef einen solchen Angriff in Erwägung ziehen könnte.
Sullivan betonte zugleich: "Wir sehen derzeit keine Hinweise auf einen unmittelbar bevorstehenden Einsatz von Atomwaffen." Der wichtigste sicherheitspolitischer Berater von US-Präsident Joe Biden fügte hinzu, die USA seien gegenüber Russland "eindeutig" gewesen, was die "Konsequenzen" eines Atomwaffeneinsatzes wären.
Sullivan sagte auch, die US-Streitkräfte in Europa seien auf alle denkbaren Szenarien vorbereitet. Er verwies dabei auf US-Truppenaufstockungen in den Monaten des Ukraine-Kriegs.
Im Westen gibt es Befürchtungen, dass Putin angesichts schwerer militärischer Rückschläge in der Ukraine auf Atomwaffen setzen könnte. Der russische Präsident hat wiederholt einen Einsatz von Atomwaffen angedroht. Die US-Regierung hat Putin sowohl öffentlich als auch über direkte Kanäle zwischen Washington und Moskau vor einem solchen Vorgehen gewarnt.
