Nach Aus im Achtelfinale: Enrique nicht mehr Spanien-Coach
Nach dem Aus im Achtelfinale der WM in Katar ist Luis Enrique nicht länger Spaniens Fußball-Nationaltrainer. Wie der spanische Verband RFEF am Donnerstag mitteilte, habe sich die sportliche Leitung gegen eine Verlängerung des Vertrags entschieden und werde stattdessen einen neuen Weg einschlagen.
Verbandspräsident Luis Rubiales und Sportdirektor Jose Francisco Molina teilten dem 52-Jährigen die Entscheidung mit. Es solle ein "neues Projekt für die spanische Nationalmannschaft auf den Weg gebracht werden", das auf der Arbeit von Enrique und seinen Mitarbeitern aufbaue, hieß es in einer Pressemitteilung.
Enrique hatte seine Zukunft zuvor nach dem 0:3 im Elfmeterschießen gegen den afrikanischen Außenseiter Marokko offen gelassen. Der Verband würdigte seine Arbeit seit 2018, mit der Enrique der Furia Roja neuen Schwung verliehen habe. Einen großen Erfolg verpasste der langjährige Profi des FC Barcelona aber, bei der EM 2021 scheiterte seine Mannschaft im Halbfinale an Italien.
Laut spanischer Medienberichte könnte U21-Nationaltrainer Luis de la Fuente auf Enrique folgen.
