Beckenbauer verzichtet auf Reise zu Peles Trauerfeier
DFB-Ehrenspielführer Franz Beckenbauer wird aus gesundheitlichen Gründen nicht zur Trauerfeier der verstorbenen Fußall-Ikone Pele reisen. "Ich würde es gerne tun, aber einen so langen Flug lässt meine Gesundheit leider nicht zu", sagte Beckenbauer der Bild am Sonntag: "Ich werde meinen Freund im Herzen auf seinem letzten Weg begleiten."
Der Kontakt zwischen den beiden Idolen wurde in letzter Zeit "weniger, weil wir ja beide angeschlagen waren. Aber eine solche Freundschaft hält trotzdem ein Leben lang", sagte Beckenbauer, der ab 1977 an der Seite des Brasilianers bei Cosmos New York gespielt hatte: "Uns bleiben ja die schönen Erinnerungen." Pele habe ihn immer seinen "weißen Bruder" genannt.
Pele, der am Donnerstag nach langer schwerer Krankheit im Alter von 82 Jahren verstorben war, wird am Dienstag in seiner Heimatstadt Santos beerdigt.
