Nach fast 18 Jahren: Nadal rutscht erstmals aus den Top 10
Eine der beeindruckendsten Rekordserien im Tennis ist gerissen: Erstmals nach fast 18 Jahren ist der spanische Superstar Rafael Nadal (36) aus den Top 10 der Weltrangliste gefallen. Der zurzeit verletzt pausierende Grand-Slam-Rekordchampion wird im am Montag veröffentlichten Ranking auf Platz 13 geführt. Zuvor hatte er schier unglaubliche 912 Wochen am Stück zu den zehn besten Spielern der Welt gehört.
Am 25. April 2005 war der damals 18-jährige Nadal erstmals in die Top 10 vorgestoßen. Jimmy Connors (USA) hatte es zwischen 1973 und 1988 auf 789 Wochen am Stück gebracht, der Schweizer Superstar Roger Federer zwischen 2002 und 2016 auf 734 Wochen in Folge. Bei den Frauen hält US-Ikone Martina Navratilova den Rekord sogar mit 1000 Wochen am Stück in den Top 10.
Nadal hatte sich bei seinem Zweitrunden-Aus bei den Australian Open eine Verletzung am Hüftbeuger zugezogen, wann der 22-malige Major-Sieger auf die Tour zurückkehrt, ist noch offen. In seiner Abwesenheit gewann sein 19 Jahre alter Landsmann Carlos Alcaraz das Masters-Turnier in Indian Wells und löste Grand-Slam-Rekordsieger Novak Djokovic (Serbien) wieder an der Spitze der Weltrangliste ab. Deutschlands Spitzenspieler Alexander Zverev verlor einen Platz und steht auf Rang 15.
