Verstappen Schnellster - Regen beeinflusst freies Training
Formel-1-Weltmeister Max Verstappen hat im freien Training zum Großen Preis von Australien die Tagesbestzeit gesetzt. Der Red-Bull-Pilot war im Albert Park in Melbourne bei seiner besten Runde ein knappes Zehntel schneller als Fernando Alonso im Aston Martin.
Der Spanier fuhr seine Bestzeit gleich zu Beginn der zweiten Einheit, ehe dauerhafter Regen in der Folge keine Verbesserungen mehr zuließ. Im ersten freien Training bei Trockenheit war Verstappen mit einer knappen halben Sekunde Vorsprung auf Rekordweltmeister Lewis Hamilton deutlich der Schnellste gewesen. Haas-Pilot Nico Hülkenberg erreichte Rang 14.
Für das Qualifying am Samstag und das Rennen am Sonntag (7.00 Uhr MESZ/Sky) werden trockene Bedingungen erwartet.
Es lief allerdings auch bei WM-Spitzenreiter Verstappen noch nicht alles rund, so unterlief ihm ein Dreher, der Niederländer suchte noch nach Grip. "Alonso ist sehr schnell und in der WM gerade 14 Punkte hinter uns - das ist nichts", sagte Red-Bull-Motorsportberater Helmut Marko bei Sky: "Das Auto ist vielleicht noch etwas zu nervös. Das wird ein enges Rennen, nehme ich an."
Auch kam es zu mehreren Beinahe-Kollisionen, weil das GPS-System zeitweise nicht reibungslos funktionierte. Die Rennleitung unterbrach das Training deswegen für einige Minuten.
Red Bull gewann die ersten beiden Saisonrennen durch Verstappen und Perez, der Niederländer liegt in der WM einen Punkt vor seinem Stallrivalen. Der Weltmeisterrennstall ist auch für den dritten Saisonlauf am Sonntag favorisiert. Allerdings gelang Red Bull letztmals 2011 durch Sebastian Vettel ein Sieg in Melbourne.
