Löwen zum zweiten Mal DHB-Pokalsieger
Die Handballer der Rhein-Neckar Löwen haben zum zweiten Mal den DHB-Pokal gewonnen. Bei der Premiere des Final-Four-Turniers in Köln besiegten die Mannheimer am Sonntag den deutschen Meister SC Magdeburg im Endspiel mit 36:34 (31:31, 27:27, 16:13) nach Siebenmeterwerfen und sicherten sich nach 2018 erneut den begehrten Titel.
Linksaußen Uwe Gensheimer (9/5) und Nationalspieler Juri Knorr (7/1 Tore) waren vor 19.750 Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauern in der ausverkauften Lanxess Arena die besten Werfer für die Mannschaft von Trainer Sebastian Hinze. Zudem bannte Gensheimer einen persönlichen Pokal-Fluch: Zum zehnten Mal war der frühere Nationalmannschaftskapitän beim Finalturnier um den DHB-Pokal dabei – erstmals durfte er über den Titel jubeln. Die Magdeburger verloren derweil ihr drittes Pokal-Endspiel in Folge und müssen weiter auf den dritten Triumph in der Pokal-Geschichte warten.
Das Finalturnier um den DHB-Pokal wurde erstmals seit 29 Jahren nicht mehr in Hamburg, sondern in Köln ausgetragen. Das wieder eingeführte Spiel um Platz drei gewann die SG Flensburg-Handewitt mit 28:23 (17:11) gegen den TBV Lemgo Lippe.
