Bonn gewinnt die Champions League
Die Telekom Baskets Bonn haben die Champions League gewonnen und ihren ersten Titel der Vereinsgeschichte geholt. Beim Final Four in Malaga feierte das Team von Trainer Tuomas Iisalo im Endspiel einen 77:70 (37:28)-Sieg gegen Hapoel Jerusalem aus Israel. Bonn sorgte nach acht verlorenen Finals für eine doppelte Premiere, nie zuvor hat eine deutsche Mannschaft in diesem Wettbewerb triumphiert.
Entscheidender Spieler beim Bundesliga-Hauptrundensieger aus Bonn war einmal mehr TJ Shorts. Der US-Amerikaner, MVP der BBL und der Champions League, war mit 29 Punkten bester Werfer des Abends. Die Telekom Baskets hatten am Freitag im Halbfinale den Gastgeber Unicaja Malaga besiegt (69:67), Jerusalem schaltete in Titelverteidiger Lenovo Teneriffa ebenfalls ein spanisches Team aus (69:68).
Bonn, fünfmaliger Vizemeister und dreimaliger Verlierer des Pokalfinales, holte den insgesamt fünften deutschen Europacup-Titel. Zuvor gewann Alba Berlin den Korac-Cup (1995), der Mitteldeutsche BC die FIBA EuroCup Challenge (2004), die BG Göttingen die EuroChallenge (2010) und die Fraport Skyliners holten den FIBA Europe Cup (2016).
Am Mittwoch steigen die Telekom Baskets verspätet in die Play-offs der Bundesliga ein. Gegner im Viertelfinale sind die Niners Chemnitz.
