Schlechtes Wetter: 13. Giro-Etappe wird verkürzt
Die 13. Etappe des Giro d'Italia ist aufgrund des schlechten Wetters stark verkürzt worden. Wie die Veranstalter am Freitag kurz vor Rennbeginn mitteilten, wird das ursprünglich auf 199 km angelegte Teilstück auf 74,6 km reduziert. Der neue Start erfolgt in Le Chable, das Ende der Etappe wird beibehalten.
Es verbleiben zwei Anstiege der 1. Kategorie, direkt nach Rennbeginn geht es hoch zum Croix de Coeur (2714 m). Nach einer Abfahrt erfolgt der Schlussanstieg mit Bergankunft im Skigebiet Crans Montana in den Schweizer Alpen (1456 m). Der Gran San Bernardo, ebenfalls ein Anstieg der 1. Kategorie, fällt aus dem Programm.
Die Strecke der Etappe war bereits zuvor wegen starker Schneefälle und einer erhöhten Lawinengefahr angepasst worden. Für die Veranstalter des Giro ist die Verkürzung die nächste organisatorische Herausforderung: Das Wetter bereitet bereits seit einigen Tagen Probleme, zudem wirbeln Corona-Infektionen das Feld durcheinander.
Am Freitag gab mit dem dänischen Ex-Weltmeister Mads Pedersen der 41. Fahrer auf. Zuvor hatte sich unter anderem auch WM-Champion Remco Evenepoel (Belgien) zurückziehen müssen.
