Zum Triple-Jubiläum: "Stolze" Popp will Henkelpott zurück
Zehn Jahre nach dem sensationellen Triple greifen die Fußballerinnen des VfL Wolfsburg nach ihrem dritten Champions-League-Triumph. "Es ist ein sehr wichtiges Zeichen auch für deutschen Frauenfußball, dass der VfL seit zehn Jahren immer oben dabei ist - und ich bin stolz darauf", sagte Kapitänin Alexandra Popp zur Einstimmung auf das Finale gegen den FC Barcelona am Samstag (16.00 Uhr/ZDF und DAZN) in Eindhoven.
Zuletzt wanderte der Henkelpokal 2014 nach Wolfsburg, 2016, 2018 und 2020 ging das Endspiel jeweils gegen Olympique Lyon verloren. Bei Barca, Titelträger von 2021 und Spaniens Serienmeister, sind bei der dritten Final-Teilnahme in Serie viele Blicke auf Weltfußballerin Alexia Putellas gerichtet.
Nach ihrem Kreuzbandriss kurz vor der EM 2022 ist die 29-Jährige wieder einsatzbereit. Ob Spaniens Superstar in seiner Startelf steht, wollte Barca-Coach Jonatan Giraldez nicht verraten - nur, dass sie auch in "offensiverer Position" auflaufen könne, "wenn man ihre Stärken im letzten Drittel sieht".
Mit ihren allseits bekannten Qualitäten als Stürmerin könnte Popp derweil im Philips Stadion eine Bestmarke einstellen. Erzielt die DFB-Spielführerin wie schon 2014, 2016 und 2020 ein Tor, wäre sie nach Ada Hegerberg erst die zweite Spielerin, die in vier verschiedenen Endspielen getroffen hat.
"Das mit dem Rekord wusste ich nicht", gab die 32-Jährige freimütig zu. Sie nehme sich einfach vor, "meine Mentalität und meine Art und Weise von Fußball auf den Platz zu bringen und so zu versuchen, das Team mitzuziehen."
