Paris: Zverev überzeugend weiter - Altmaier scheitert
Befreiungsschlag in Paris: Alexander Zverev hat exakt ein Jahr nach seiner schweren Knöchelverletzung an gleicher Stelle die Reifeprüfung bei den French Open bestanden und das Achtelfinale erreicht. Gegen den Weltranglistenzwölften Frances Tiafoe aus den USA gewann der Tennis-Olympiasieger am Samstagabend nach starker Leistung 3:6, 7:6 (7:3), 6:1, 7:6 (7:5) - und zog zum sechsten Mal in Folge in die Runde der besten 16 in Roland Garros ein.
Zum erhofften deutschen Duell mit Daniel Altmaier kommt es dort aber nicht. Der 24-Jährige musste seinem Sieg im Marathonmatch gegen den italienischen Topspieler Jannik Sinner Tribut zollen und verlor entkräftet und völlig chancenlos mit 4:6, 3:6, 1:6 gegen den Bulgaren Grigor Dimitrow - Zverevs kommendem Gegner im Achtelfinale.
Nach seiner langen Leidenszeit im Anschluss an die Verletzung und der holprigen Vorbereitung auf den Sandplatz-Grand-Slam scheint der 26-Jährige seine Form zum richtigen Zeitpunkt wieder gefunden zu haben. Gegen Tiafoe überzeugte Zverev in weiten Teilen der Partie auch spielerisch.
Altmaier hatte nach seinem Sieg über Sinner zuvor die nächste Überraschung verpasst. Im Jahr 2020 schaffte er es in Paris noch bis ins Achtelfinale - gegen den erfahrenen Dimitrow fehlten ihm diesmal aber merklich die Kräfte.
